Who starts a business during a recession? How about: Hyatt, CNN, Burger King, IHOP, FedEx, Microsoft, Trader Joe’s, Sports Illustrated, Walt Disney and GE. Sixteen of the 30 companies listed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were launched during recessions. And now there’s the on-line NonProfit National Resource Directory, which is just 3 months old and growing.
The directory is the brainchild of Marcia Bloomberg, CEO of The Bloomberg Group, a coaching and consulting firm in Massachusetts.
In the fall of 2008, Bloomberg decided to set up a website that would connect nonprofit organizations with coaches, consultants, vendors, specialists throughout the United States, although she had no website design experience. Working with a web creation and hosting firm, she designed the site to be simple and user friendly.
Bloomberg knew that, with nonprofit organizations downsizing, merging or laying off essential personnel and with the coming retirement of baby boomers who have served nonprofits for many years, the need for temporary outside assistance on a project by project basis is even more important.
