Exciting Vacations with a Purpose

Jac Kern | The News Record

While many people envision spring break as an endless booze-filled beach party, several University of Cincinnati students are opting for service-oriented vacations this month.

Serve Beyond Cincinnati is an organization run by UC students that provides young people in Cincinnati with the chance to volunteer around the world. It is run through the Center for Community Engagement, and SBC members mainly work on construction sites for housing
and schools.

According to the organization’s Web site, its mission is “to inspire and empower students to positively benefit the communities of the world throughout their lives.”

SBC allows students to volunteer in and out of the country during winter and spring breaks. The organization’s co-president, Katie Usalis, noted that in the past, groups have traveled to Alabama, Louisiana, Georgia, Texas, northern and southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Cameroon, Africa.
