Donations for the Warren County United Way fell nearly $49,000 short of the organization’s 2008 fundraising goal, according to final campaign numbers released today.

Residents and businesses have pledged about 98 percent of the $2.175 million goal – an accomplishment described as no small feat at a time when charitable donations nationwide are drying up and record numbers of people are asking for help.

Even so, the shortfall in Warren County has left organizers looking for ways to make up for about $2,000 less in donations per month over the next year. That’s money that won’t be available to feed hungry families, give shelter to the homeless or help children, said Warren County United Way Director Michael Schepers.

“The (loss) will be felt,” he said. “We set the goals for a reason. The need is there.”

No plans have been made to cut funding to the 29 agencies that receive help from the organization. Typically, checks are distributed in July.
